Frequently asked questions

The questions we get most, answered without the marketing gloss.

How much does a good robot lawn mower cost in 2026?

Credible wire-free robot mowers start around $700 (Segway Navimow i206, ECOVACS Goat O800). The value sweet spot is $1,000 to $2,000, where LiDAR navigation and half-acre coverage live. Premium all-terrain machines run $2,000 to $3,500, and estate-class systems for one to six acres run $3,500 to $6,000 and up.

Do robot mowers still need a boundary wire?

Mostly no. In 2026 the majority of new models use RTK satellite positioning, LiDAR, camera vision, or a fusion of them to map your lawn virtually from an app. Wired models like the Worx Landroid still exist and remain the most reliable option for lawns with narrow passages or extreme shade on a budget.

Can robot mowers handle slopes and hills?

It varies enormously, and it's the spec to check first. Budget mowers manage 30 to 45% grades. All-wheel-drive machines like the Mammotion LUBA 3 series handle 80%, the Segway X430 is rated to 84%, and the tracked Lymow One Plus climbs 100% (45°). Exceeding a mower's slope rating is the top cause of stuck-robot complaints.

Are robot mowers safe around kids and pets?

Modern models carry lift and tilt sensors that stop blades instantly, recessed blade decks, and AI obstacle avoidance that detects people and animals. Vision-first models (eufy E15/E18) lead in recognizing pets. That said, every manufacturer recommends not running the mower while small children play on the lawn. Treat it like any power tool.

How long do robot lawn mowers last?

Well-maintained machines from established brands routinely run five to ten years. Husqvarna has the longest longevity record in the industry. Batteries typically need replacement after three to five years ($100 to $300), and cutting blades are consumables replaced every month or two in season for a few dollars each.

Do robot mowers work in rain?

Most are IPX4 to IPX6 water resistant and can physically mow in rain, but nearly all include rain sensors that pause mowing by default, since wet cutting is worse for both turf and traction. AWD and tracked models handle damp ground far better than 2WD machines.

How do robot mowers handle lawn edges?

Edges are the traditional weak spot. Most mowers leave a strip of two to four inches along walls and fences for the string trimmer. The ECOVACS Goat A3000 LiDAR Pro changes this with a built-in TruEdge trimmer, and off-center blade designs (Worx Cut-to-Edge, ECOVACS zero-edge) narrow the gap on other models.

Which robot mower brand is best?

There is no single best brand, only best fits. Mammotion leads all-terrain performance, Segway leads wire-free value and volume, ECOVACS leads LiDAR precision and edge finishing, eufy leads setup simplicity, and Husqvarna leads long-term reliability and dealer support. Our tier pages rank the top models in each price bracket.
